George Washington Carlton first arrived in Texas settling at Hood County in 1858. He volunteer in March 1863 for Hood's Texas Brigade in the War Between the States. He was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga and was captured in late fall of 1864 and remained a prisoner of war until June 1865. After marrying Nancy Rogers in Jackson County, Alabama, they together with the George Rogers, Willis and Turner families, migrated back to Texas settling at Hood County in 1872. The family moved to Young County in 1873 settling in the Center Ridge Community. George Washington Carlton was a farmer in the area and was very active with the Young County United Confederate Veterans Camp No. 127.
