Luginbuel Funeral Home ("we," "us") operates luginbuel.com to serve our community with obituaries, cemetery records, and local history. This policy describes what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Information We Collect
When you use our website, we may collect the following:
- Tribute submissions. Your name, relation, city, state, and message when you leave a tribute. These are reviewed by automated and human moderation before publication and appear alongside the person's obituary.
- Family edit submissions. When a family member uses an invite link to edit a loved one's obituary, we receive the biographical information, photos, and obituary text they submit, along with the family member's name, relationship to the deceased, and contact email.
- Photographs. Photos uploaded by families to accompany obituaries. By uploading, you affirm you have rights to share the photo and authorize us to display it on the obituary page.
- Document requests. Documents (death certificates, authorization forms) that families upload via the family edit page in response to our requests.
- Analytics. Page views, device type, browser, approximate location (city level), and referring website. IP addresses are truncated before storage. Collected only after you accept cookies on the consent banner.
- Server logs. Standard request metadata (timestamps, URLs, response codes, user agent) used for security and operations, retained for 90 days.
How We Use It
We use the information above only to deliver the services requested — publishing obituaries and tributes, processing family edit submissions, operating the website, and protecting against abuse. We do not sell your information to anyone, and we do not use it for advertising.
Publicly Displayed Information
Obituaries, cemetery records, and approved tributes are intended for public view and are indexed by search engines. If you believe information about you or a family member should be corrected or removed, please contact us using the details below.
Cookies & Similar Technologies
We use a small number of cookies and browser storage entries:
- Strictly necessary. Anti-abuse tokens (reCAPTCHA) on forms and your cookie consent choice. These are set without prior consent because the site cannot function without them.
- Analytics (optional). Google Analytics cookies that count repeat visits and aggregate site traffic. Set only after you click Accept on the consent banner. You can change your choice at any time using the link in the site footer.
Third-Party Processors
We rely on the following service providers to operate the website. Each processes only what they need for their stated purpose, and each is bound by their own privacy and security commitments.
- Google Cloud Platform — hosts the website (Cloud Run) and the database (Supabase). All data we collect is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure.
- Supabase — manages our database and file storage for obituary records, photographs, and family-uploaded documents. Self-hosted on Google Cloud.
- Google Analytics 4 — provides aggregated usage statistics. Loads only with your consent. IP anonymization is enabled. Standard retention: 14 months.
- Google reCAPTCHA Enterprise — protects forms from bots and abuse. May read browser fingerprints and cookies set by Google. Required for tribute submissions.
- Google Maps — embeds cemetery location maps. Loads from Google's servers when you view a map; subject to Google's privacy policy.
- Google Fonts — serves the typefaces used on the site from Google's CDN.
- Anthropic (Claude) — assists with two features: an optional obituary-writing assistant on the family edit page, and automated review of tribute submissions for spam and harmful content. Submitted text is sent to Anthropic for processing and is not used to train their models per their API terms.
Your Rights
Regardless of where you live, you may request:
- A summary of personal information we hold about you.
- Correction of information that's inaccurate.
- Removal of personal information, subject to legitimate retention requirements.
- Withdrawal of consent for analytics cookies at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We respond within 30 days. California residents have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information — we do not sell or share personal information for advertising purposes.
Retention
Public records (obituaries, cemetery information, approved tributes, county history entries) are retained indefinitely as part of our historical archive. Family-edit drafts and document uploads are retained for the lifetime of the corresponding obituary record. Server logs are retained for 90 days. Analytics data follows Google's 14-month default. Removal requests for public records are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Children's Privacy
Our website is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through our site, please contact us and we will remove it.
