David served with Company C of the 40th Regiment, Illinois Infantry during the War Between the States. He was killed during the Battle of Pittsburg Landing in Tennessee on 6 Apr 1862. His stepfather, John Rankin Nelson, served in the same regiment and was wounded in the same battle.
