Notes

McCLELLAN, E.W. - We regret to announce the death of our old friend

Mr. E.W. McClellan, who died at his home at Boonsboro, this county, on

last Saturday. “Uncle White” was one of Washington county’s best and most

highly respected citizens and his loss will be keenly felt. A more extended

notice will appear next week. [Fayetteville Democrat 2/16/82]

Last week we noticed briefly the death of our old and highly respected

citizen, Mr. E.W. McClennan of Boonsboro. The deceased was born a little

more than seventy-one years ago near Campbell’s Station, Knox county, E.

Tenn. While yet in his youth his father, Col. John McClellan, removed with

his family to Morgan county, Alabama and from there in 1830 to Cane Hill

in this county. It will thus be seen that “Uncle White,” as he was familiarly

called, had been a citizen of this county, and of the same community, for

fifty-two years, in which time he established a reputation for high-toned

integrity and generous hospitality that will long survive him. He was extensively

known through Northwest Arkansas and in the Indian Territory.

A large-hearted, genial gentleman of fine social qualities and kindly impulses;

he counted his friends by the thousands, Enemies, he had none.

The deceased had been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church

for a number of years and contributed to its support with a generous and

unstinted liberality; dying in full fellowship and standing in the church of

his choice. For the last four or five years he had been slowly yet surely

failing in health but especially for the last two years had he been an invalid

and a great portion of the time a helpless one. Death came not unexpectedly,

yet the blow was heavily felt. His place will be hard to fill and he

will be sadly missed, especially where he has been so long and favorably

known. He had been a Mason for a long time and his obsequies were duly

attended by the fraternity. We esteemed him in life and we mourn him in

death but we trust he has entered into eternal rest. We tender our sympathy

and condolence to the bereaved widow and the son and daughter of

our lamented friend. [Fayetteville Democrat 2/23/1882]
