HAILEY- A graveside service for Johnie M. Boyd, 66, of Hailey, who died Sunday will be held at 11 a.m. in the Hailey cemetery. The funeral procession will leave the Wood River Chapel in Hailey at 10:45 a.m., led by a horse-drawn wagon.
Johnie, was the 6th of 9 children born to David Edgar Boyd (from Arkansas) and Martha "Pearl" Spencer (from Missouri). His parents had settled in Lincoln County, Idaho before 1910 and later in Jerome County by the time he was born in February of 1917. Johnie was only 6 when just two days after Christmas, his father passed away from a ruptured appendix. His mother, Pearl then came to depend on the help of her 9 children and especially her older sons, to help keep the family homestead running well. Johnie had musical talent and a way with horses. He broke several horses in his lifetime. He loved to play the fiddle and harmonica for entertainment at family gatherings. Johnie met Esther Peterson through his sister, Pauline. He, Esther, Pauline and Pauline's beau, Jimmy Chestnut, eloped together in Elko, Nevada in April 1939. Johnie and Esther had 5 children. After raising their children, they settled in Blaine County, Idaho, where Esther was born. Johnie died on July 31, 1983, and is buried in Hailey, Blaine County Idaho.
