Joseph L. Barron

Joseph was horn in 1800 in the Territory South of the Ohio,

later Washington County, Tennessee. He came to Washington

County, Arkansas in November of 1848, from Campbell County,

Tennessee.

Joseph and Femmon Sharp Barron brought a large family

with them, however, two married children stayed behind. They

were Calvin M., born circa 1820, who married Connie Baird; and

Nancy, born circa 1821, who married William Baird. The

children who came to Arkansas: Hiram H., born February 26,

1825, who married Dicey Spencer. Their children were George

Houston; Gustavious Adolphus, "Gus"; Sarah and Martha, twins;

and Lewis Edgar. Andrew D. Thomas, born 1828, married

Wincey Cornelio Stevenson. John Alford, born January 26,

1829, married Mary Jane Hanna, daughter of Ebenizer and

Martha Hanna. Mary Jane was born February 22, 1837. Richard

S., born in 1831, and died about 1890. He married Nancy Jane

Hanna on December 31, 1857, she died and he married Harriet

Tinnen on August 16, 1868. Joseph, Jr., born 1833 died in 1863

in the war between the States. Lewis Baird, born May 15, 1835,

he married Nancy Caroline Perritte. Emily Jane, born February

1837, she married William Skelton Hanna on September 16,

1857. Femmon Elizabeth, born May 20, 1840, married Samuel

Hanna on June 28, 1859. She died on May 12, 1874. Elizabeth,

married Stephens Fields in 1858. James Madison, "Matt", born

in 1846, married Charlotte Rutherford on December 12, 1869.

William Marion, born April 1, 1842, married Nancy Jane Hanna

on February 6, 1862. Nancy was the daughter of Joseph and

Nancy Hamilton Hanna.

Their children were: George W. who married Lizzie Cass; Ida,

who married Jim Carney; David Marshall, who was born August

25, 1867, he married Emma McKenzie first, and after her death

he married Eliza Hutchins. Mary Dallas, born July 2, 1869,

married William Wesley Cass on January 17, 1890; Isola, born

June 28, 1871, married Jefferson Rembert on December 2, 1889;

Millie F., born June 27, 1875, never married; Alice May, born

May 10, 1880, married John Parsley; Ebenezer, born April 6,

1862, married Alice Williams, then Myrtle Henderickson on

November 11, 1905. Mack, born April 29, 1884, married Mamie

Wilson on January 17, 1906. Mrs. Doris Wells of Elkins, Ted

Barron of Fayetteville, and Wayne Barron are the children of

Mack and Mamie.

Walter Grey (W. G.), my grandfather, was born July 21, 1873

at Billingsley. He was the sixth child of William and Nancy.

As a boy Walter often took his nearly blind grandfather

Joseph swimming and it was at times like this that Joseph would

tell Walter of his life in Tennessee.

As a young man, Walter worked at the country store owned

by "Uncle Gus" at Combs. It was here that he met Sarah Lewis,

daughter of William Lewis and Amanda Hurst Lewis. Sarah was

living in the home of her uncle, Dr. D. U. Hurst, the town

Doctor of Combs. Walter and Sarah were married January 31,

1894. Nearly all their married life was spent at Fayetteville, but

their final years were lived at Rogers. Walter and Sarah had a

large family, the children: Lena Mae, born April 5, 1895, married

Frank Thorpe; Walter Paul, born September 14, 1896, married

Lena Frank Bowers; Victor Dewey, born April 16, 1898, married

Hazel Francis Foley; Gladys, born October 13, 1900, never

married; Rollin Lewis, born September 9, 1902, married Enid

Shofner, daughter of Fred and Ethel Shofner, who lives at

Springdale. The children of Rollin and Enid are, Rollin, Jr., of

Springdale and Betty Jo. Hollis Roscoe, born October 3, 1904,

married Vivian Lenore Bell, daughter of Ernest and Gertrude

Bell. Vivian lives at Rogers. Their children: Jack Leslie, Jo Belle,

Robert Clayton, and Donna Gayle.

Oswald, born March 15, 1907, died as a child; Buster Marcus,

born November 16, 1909, married Dorothy Hixson. Their son

Jerry lives at Joplin.

Wade Barron, born December 9, 1911, married Lela

Anderson. Lela lives in Fayetteville. Their son, Pat Phillip, was

born December 14, 1937, and married Ruth Bent. Two

daughters survive them: Michalle and Katrina.

Max and Maxine were born July 25, 1914. Max married Margaret

Reeves on September 12, 1937. Their children are: Marilyn

Louise, Max Reeves, and Margaret Gene. Margaret now lives in

Fayetteville. Maxine married Stanley A. Madison and now lives

in Washington, D. C.

Amey Gene, born December 11, 1916, died in an auto

accident on October 19th, 1938. Joseph and Femmon came to

Arkansas with a large family, but at age ninety plus and blind, he

alone returned to his boyhood home in Tennessee to live his last

days with his son Calvin.
