Elroy Chinn, 92
Mr. Elroy Chinn, age 92 of Midway, Arkansas passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011 at his residence. He was born March 17, 1919 in El Campo, Texas to Collier and Theodoshia Barnes Chinn. He married Sharron Kay Groce on May 17, 2000 in Florence, Arizona. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Mr. Chinn led a very interesting life. He was denied education as a youth and learned to read at age 84 from the Twin Lakes Literacy Council. He was the Arkansas Student of the Year in 2005 and the International Student of the Year in 2006. He was a motivational speaker for literacy as well.
He is survived by his wife, Sharron Kay Chinn of Midway; a son, Herbert Lee Chinn of Texas; 2 step-sons: Joshua Smith and Samuel Smith, both of Mesa, Arizona; 2 step-daughters: Sara Smith of Springdale, Arkansas and Mary Smith of Mesa, Arizona; 3 half sisters: Martha Hill and Dorothy Franklin, both of Victoria, Texas and Wilma Mae Chinn; 2 half brothers: Dr. Cornelius Chinn of San Angelo, Texas and Vernon Chinn of Big Springs, Texas; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 12 until 9 PM Monday, September 5 at Roller Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6 until 8 PM. A funeral service, conducted by Bishop Tom Fox will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, September 6 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mountain Home. Interment will be 11 AM Wed. September 7, 2011 at the Cheatham Family Cemetery in Lincoln, Arkansas.
