The body of H.T. Neal, who was accidentally drowned in the Arkansas river
while crossing a drove of cattle a few miles below Van Buren on the 6th
inst., was recovered on the following Thursday evening, one mile and a
half below the place of drowning. W.T. Neal, his brother, and J.J. Bagget,
who had gone down to look for the body and take charge of the stock, had it
encased, the former accompanying, it arrived here on Saturday evening
last. Many sorrowing relatives and friends were in waiting. He was buried
on the family lot in the Prairie Grove cemetery, the Rev. Mr. Calloway
conducting the funeral services. H.T. Neal was a son of the late Col. Wm. T.
Neal of this place; was born and raised here and was in the 28th year of his
age. His business was trading in stock. He was sober and temperate in his
habits, social in his disposition and universally esteemed by his acquaintances
for his generous, manly deportment and for his honesty and truthfulness.
Few who die, either old or young, aroused so much sympathy and
regret. M. [Fayetteville Democrat 10/19/1882]
