Former Beloved Talladega Teacher Died in Atlanta Saturday
The body of Miss Clara Cruikshank, former Talladega school teacher, who died in Atlanta Saturday afternoon, was brought here Sunday for interment.
the funeral was held at the grave Monday afternoon, Rev. William Crowe, Jr. pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery, Jackson & Clardy conducting. Pallbearers were R. Heine, J. L. chambers, H. C. McConnell, Albert H. Todd, Otis R. Burton and J. C. Bowie.
Miss Cruikshank was a native of Talladega, daughter of the late M. H. Cruikshank, attorney and editor of the Watchtower and Reporter weekly newspapers. She taught school at North side school for about 30 years, many Talladega residents having been taught by her during that period. She left Talladega about 20 years ago and went to Birmingham where she resided several years, then went to Atlanta. She is survived by a brother, George M. Cruikshank, of Foley.
Miss Cruikshank was a member of a talented family with which her educational and cultural attainments were in keeping. Her fathers was a member of the Congress of the Confederate States of America and her brother, Geo. M. Cruikshank was former editor of the Birmingham Ledger.
Interesting note: While Clara was teaching at the School for the Blind she boarded at the Jemison Home, 206 East Coffee Street, Talladega, AL. The Jemison Home was run by the ancestors of Mary Lea Jemison Sims, who married Herbert Dark Sims. Herbert is Clara's 1st cousin twice removed.
