SKELTON, W.A. – Mrs. J.N.C. Skelton, widow of W.A. Skelton, who died December 11, 1901, filed Widow Application #13851 with the Confederate Pension Board of Washington County for a Confederate widow pension and it was received as allowed August 11, 1913 at the State, citing her husband’s service with Company F, 19thTennessee Infantry from1862 thru 1865. [State of Arkansas Confederate Pension Archives] SKELTON, Jane McConnell HANNAH – Mrs. Skelton’s death, which was chronicled in the last issue of the Herald, occurred at the home of her son, Mr. R.H. Skelton, in Prairie Grove, Thursday, November 10th, 1921, aged 85 years, 5 months and sixteen days. She had been an invalid for a number of years and made her home with her sons, R.H. and J.A. Skelton in Prairie Grove. Mrs. Skelton was born near Benton, Polk County, Tennessee, May 24, 1836. She was a daughter of the late John F. Hannah and his wife Gracy Hannah, and is the last of six children, all of whom died suddenly, as did her brother, Judge R.O. Hannah, last spring. Her sickness was long and she suffered much.
When a young girl she made a profession of religion and united with the Southern Presbyterian church. She was married to William A. Skelton June 12, 1860. Three sons were born to them, R.H. Skelton and J.A. Skelton of Prairie Grove and John W. Skelton, who died at St. Maries, Idaho, January 12, 1921. Her husband died December 11, 1901 and since that time her two sons, Robert and James, have had their mother in their homes, where she was tenderly cared for and where she will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Skelton was a woman of many beautiful traits of character and although practically all her life she had been frail and part of it an invalid, she always had a kind word for all whom it was her privilege to know.
The funeral took place Saturday morning, Rev. T.P. Harrison, assisted by Rev. Ernest Downs, officiating the service and the burial was made in the family lot beside her husband in the Howell graveyard south of town. Many beautiful flowers were banked on the grave mound. Card of Thanks – To our many friends who so kindly assisted in our dear mother’s last sickness and at the time of her death, and for the many beautiful flowers, we wish to express our thanks and will ever remember you kindly. May the Lord bless each one. – R.H. Skelton and family, J.A. Skelton and wife [Prairie Grove Herald 11/17/1921]
