Notes

MARY FRANCES BROCK (GREEN) 7/2/1923-8/10/2021

Heaven’s Pearly Gates opened wide and God accepted Mary onto the streets paved with gold, August 10, 2021 at her daughter’s home in Hickory Creek, TX.

Mary was born July 2, 1923 in Cane Hill, Washington Co., Arkansas to Bertha Mae (Cox) & Algie Elgin Green.

While growing up… her daddy and siblings would lose something…her mother’s constant words “go ask Mary” as Mary would always find the lost objects. “Mary this and Mary that” and she told all “I’M GOING TO CHANGE MY NAME”.

In 1942, Mary graduated Salutatorian at Morrow High School, Morrow, AR and finished studies at Business College in Fayetteville, AR. Upon completion, she applied and was accepted to work for the WWII War Department in Washington, DC. She boarded the train to DC to work in the Pentagon “Letter Sub Section’ department. Her group sent notifications to the families of the wounded WWII warriors.

Three girlfriends…lured by the thought of rowing a canoe across the Potomac… caused consternation for the Coast Guard. A storm was brewing, not the place to be battling a river (when none of the young ladies could swim). Having loaded the young ladies in their rescue vessel, the Coast Guard brought them safely to shore. Just another escapade in her 98 years of life.

While visiting a cousin in TX, she met her future husband Billy Vandon Brock. They married June 5, 1945 and boarded the bus to Oakland, CA for Vandon to reboard the USS Estes. Since all soldiers took precedence, Mary was stranded at the bus depot and had to find housing in this strange area. She sent a telegram to the USS Estes stating her address, but this paper was buried in the ship’s “In Box”. Meanwhile, Billy purchased a newspaper ad… “Navy man loses wife”. Eventually, the lost telegram was found at the bottom of the pile stating Mary’s address. What a way to begin a new marriage!

Always the care giver, she was available to take her parents to any of their appointments. If you had a birthday, illness, wedding, new baby or surgery there would be a card waiting for you at your house from Mary. She was always helping her daughters (whether sending a cookie package to Texas, picking up a lamb for the granddaughter to show neighbors or taking grandsons for ice cream). She was always providing help where needed.

Mary and B. V. owned Brock Motor Company in Lincoln, AR about 20 years. Later, they were partners in B&B Implement of Huntsville, AR. Mary was very active in the communities as Sunday School teacher, PTA president and Bookkeeper. She retired from Lewisville Schools Cafeteria System, Lewisville, TX …having been loved by everyone, especially, the special needs children.

Mary is proceeded in death by her husband, Billy V. Brock; parents, Algie & Bertha (Cox) Green; brothers Cyrus and Willard Green; sister, Zelma Barkley.

She is survived by three sisters: Wilma Myers (James), Myrtle Ray, Zelta Mae Harrison of Springdale, AR; Three daughters: Sheron & Steve James of Texas, Dolores & Richard Sauer of California, Francie & Anthony Gray of Texas. Five Grandchildren: Jason Carter (Tami), John Clinton Sauer (Raina), Elie Martin (Ed), Emily Sauer, Brock Gray. Six Great Grandchildren: Brandon Carter, Brent Carter, Vanden Sauer, Sadie Sauer, Bronwynn Martin, Leland Martin. She is survived by many nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces and a host of friends.
