Notes

Alford R. Turner was born in Fulton, Missouri. He came to Texas with Price's Cavalry in search of horses. He return after the war to marry his sweetheart and farmed in Lamar County until his death.

Living in the same household on the 1880 United States Census was a Robert F. Burton, born in 1855 in Mississippi and was 25 year old in 1880. He was listed as a boarder, single, white and the relationship ship was listed as other. His father was born in Mississippi and his mother was born in Tennessee. It would appear that Magret A. Burton was related to Robert F. Burton in some way.

Also lving in the same household on the 1880 United States Census was a Peter A. Shaw, born in 1857 in Georgia. He age was 23 and was listed as a farmer, boarder, single, white.

HICKORY GROVE, TEXAS (Lamar County). Hickory Grove is at the intersection of Farm Road 137 and a gravel road four miles west of Roxton in southwestern Lamar County. It is bordered on the east by Noble Creek and on the west by Ghost Creek. By 1896 the Hickory Grove school reported sixty-seven students and one teacher. The 1936 county highway map showed the community as an unidentified school, a church, two cemeteries, and a cluster of dwellings. By 1957 the Hickory Grove school had been consolidated into the Roxton Independent School District, and by the early 1980s only the cemeteries remained at the site.
