North Carolina
Daughter of Edmund Massie and Mary Dabney / D'Aubigne Winston of Hanover County, Virginia. Wife of James Rankin. Mother of Sarah (Rankin) Weaver Whinery.
Tom McMillan has researched Margaret Massey a great deal. Tom found Edmond Massey and Mary Dabney were not Margaret's parents, unlikely there was such a couple. Tom found Edmond's spouse had first name "Hannah". Tom believes the name was "Massey". Margaret Massey married James Rankin about 1800 at East Tennessee. Rev Thomas Jefferson Bryant was Margaret's Grandson, and his Autobiography from 1890 reveals Margaret's mother's maiden name was "Barrett", likely Nancy Barrett. Margaret had known siblings, Isaac Massey who went from Tennessee to Macoupin Co, IL in 1829; a sister Susannah/Susan Massey who married James Bradshaw in 1800 at Jefferson Co, TN and Thomas Rankin gave bond for this marriage. This Thomas Rankin was either James Rankin's father or brother. The 1850 census for Margaret (Massey) Rankin; for Isaac Massey; and for Susan (Massey) Bradshaw all show each were born at North Carolina. Rev Bryant's autobiography had info that led us back to the Barrett line of Jonathan Barrett, and Barrett's Mountain in North Carolina was named for him. DNA matches show we are related to that line of Barrett. He would have been the father of Nancy Barrett who married a Massey in North Carolina. Edmond Massie and Mary Dabney had no connection to North Carolina, they went from Virginia to Kentucky. DNA is pointing to Massey lines in North Carolina, but finding the correct Massey father of the siblings is a work in progress. Username for Tom McMillan at ancestry is tomwdcraftr and you can read Tom's Bryant and Massey Research PDF file at the gallery for Margaret Massey at Tom's, McMillan Heritage family tree. Susan (Massey) Bradshaw's death record showed her father's name as "Moss" which was a mistake, and does show her mother's first name was "Nancy". Margaret (Massey) Rankin and Isaac Massey had both named children "Nancy", but Margaret's daughter by that name died in infancy. The Bradshaw family had lived at Overton Co, TN for a number of years, and our James and Margaret (Massey) Rankin were also there on the 1830 census. Isaac Massey's first wife, Elizabeth Bristow grew up at Overton Co, TN, likely where Isaac Massey married her. Tom has a property record for Isaac for Macoupin Co, IL that shows who Isaac Massey served with for the War of 1812. The units he (and James Rankin) served with were established at Jacson Co, TN which is next to Overton County. Margaret also had a sibling name Sarah Massey, but so far we don't have info for her.
