Washington County, Pennsylvania
George was born July 18, 1838 in Washington County, Pa., to John and Eleanor (Taylor) Rankin. He married Malvina Jane Andrews August 8, 1860 and they had nine children, two of whom died infancy.
George graduated as a physician in 1859 from the Jefferson College at Washington, Washington County, Pa. Following graduation, he moved to Mississippi to take up a residency.
While in Mississippi he enlisted in the Confederate Army April 1, 1862 at Panola, Mississippi, and served in Company A of the 14th Light Infantry Battalion . July 1st, 1862 he signed Form 32 - "Requisition for Forage for Public Horses, Mules and Oxen" as Quartermaster Sergeant. July 29, 1863 he signed a "requisition for forage for public horses" as a Quartermaster Captain. On the November/December 1863 unit report he was listed as "absent without leave since December 26, 1863" on his unit's muster roll at Enterprise, Mississippi...what happened? Turns out he was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and was paroled the same day. On that day he swore an oath to not take up arms against the US and no longer work for the Confederate States of America.
In 1866, George moved to Linesville with his wife and son John, where their daughter Mary was born May 15th (daughters Kate and Effie had died previously). Dr. Rankin's medical practice was a considerable one, but he gave up being a physician before 1891 when he was a druggist with Bowman and Rankin in Linesville, which later became Rankin & Son.
He was a member of Linesville Masonic Lodge, Royal Arcanum, and the Protective Home Circle.
George died May 7, 1910 in Linesville of cardiac exhaustion and was buried here May 9, 1910.
