Oldest Native Son of Fannin County Died Last Night
Death Occurred At Home Almost In Sight Of Place Where He Was Born
Last night at 7:30 R. A. Latta died at his home in Dodd City after an illness of about one month.
It is expected that the funeral will be held this afternoon but at the time this is written it is not known for a certainty that this will be, as word is awaited from relatives.
So far as we have been able to learn, Mr. Latta was, at the time of his death, the oldest native son of Fannin county, having been born on the old Latta farm on Sloan's creek on February 18, 1847. He was therefore, eighty-five years old last February. There are older persons in Fannin county than he, but none who were born here.
In 1847 there were very few people in Fannin county. The buffalo and the wild Indians were still reigning supreme just a few miles west of us. He was truly a pioneer who grew up amid pioneer surroundings. He did his part as a good citizen in the development of the county in ways material, political and moral. There are many things to be told about his experience that would be of interest were we in possession of the details. Certain it is that he had the respect and esteem of the people among whom he had lived so many years.
When a young man he was converted and united with the old Cumberland Presbyterian church, which is now known as the Presbyterian Church, U. S. A., and whose vows he was always faithful and wohse worship he was constant.
He is survived by one daughter and five sons.
The surviving children are Mrs. Geo. Meachum, of Salina: Hez Latta of El Paso, Jack and Alf. Jr., of Dallas, Worth and Mont of Dodd City.
