Virginia records state that the UZZELL family was originally French Huguenot and left France to escape religious persecution. It also tells of an old USSEL (sic) Castle in the Valley of Aosta and claims that one French family was very prominent in the 11th-13th centuries. (The Valley of Aosta is now in Poland.) [Italy? Richard Ezell]
In the early 1650's Captain Canfield/Canfuld from France brought several persons into what was first known as "the Territory of Tappahanna" (Indian name), over against James City. This was often called the "Surry side of Jamestown." Surry was first mentioned as a county in 1652. For this, Capt. Canfield received 500 acres of land on 24 Jan 1656 (Pat. No. 52).
In (Davis 1652-1654, p. 6) it is recorded that Timothy Issell was in Virginia on 4 Jan 1652.
The will of Timothy Issell was the first found by the name. The will is in very bad condition, parts not legible. From what can be read, it is dated 14 July 1677. Final settlement was made in 1697. Consequently, Timothy was born before 1652 and died between 1677 and 1697. An inventory of his estate is found in Surry Co., VA.
Timothy's wife was Mary, d/o Amaro DeTores.
