FAYETTEVILLE — Elzie Edwin Carlton, 72, of Fayetteville died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Washington Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 2, 1936, in Murray to Leonard and Oma Holland Carlton.
Elzie led a very active life, traveling to Washington and Oregon while he was a teenager to pick apples. He drove a truck for a while, worked at the Fulbright Lumber Company and Deep Rock Service Station on Arkansas 62 and Razorback Road. It was here that he found what he liked to do. He was a top-notch mechanic, and he loved to visit with his customers. He took over running the station after Kerr McGee took over and ran it until they sold the location to the University of Arkansas. He bought Bud's Foreign Auto Shop in Greenland on Sept. 1, 1994, and did business in the Greenland community until his death.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Eldin Carlton who died at birth, and his older brother, Richard Carlton.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Thelma Ann Carlton, of Fayetteville; a son, David Wayne Carlton and wife Cheryl Ann (Hansen), of Brentwood; a daughter, Cynthia Ann Carlton, of Fayetteville; brothers, Stanley Clinton Carlton of Stilwell, Okla., Jimmy Leonard Carlton of Springdale, Bobby Carlton of Summers; sisters, Faye (Carlton) Bailey of Stilwell and Ginger (Carlton) Reed of Cane Hill; two grandchildren, Rachel Annette Carlton, of Fayetteville and Megan Ann Carlton of Brentwood.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Moore's Chapel. Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery, with Lloyd Thomas officiating.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Moore's Chapel.
