Shirley Sharon Murphy ('71), Irving. She was co-founder of the Mail Box Inc., a Dallas direct-mailing company. In 1997, she and her husband established the Ken and Shirley Murphy Scholarship in Entrepreneurship at UNT. They also donated $1 million to establish the Murphy Enterprise Center in the Department of Management. Shirley received UNT's Distinguished Alumna Award last year.

Deceased Name: Shirley Sharon Murphy
IRVING - Shirley Sharon Luginbyhl Murphy, 60, former vice president, secretary-treasurer and director of The Mail Box Inc., died of brain cancer Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at home.
Funeral: 1 p.m. Saturday at Donnelly's Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial: Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, Irving. Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Murphy was born Jan. 23, 1941, in Denton County to Philo Arnold and Edna Mildred Joyner Luginbyhl. She graduated from Denton High School in 1959 and from the University of North Texas (then North Texas State University) with a degree in secondary education in 1971.
She married Kenneth W. "Ken" Murphy on March 3, 1962, in Denton.
After graduation from North Texas, Shirley rejoined her husband at The Mail Box, which they had co-founded in 1970. Over the years, Shirley developed several areas of the company, particularly client services, from which she retired as vice president in 1990.
Shirley and Ken remained affiliated with the University of North Texas through the years and, in 1997, endowed the Kenneth W. and Shirley Murphy Scholarship in Entrepreneurship. In 1999, they provided funding for the College of Business to establish the Murphy Enterprise Center to foster relationships between small and medium-sized businesses and the university faculty and students. The university created the Shirley Murphy Entrepreneurial Contest to reward students with the best business plans for actual businesses in her name. In 2000, Shirley was named as a distinguished alumnus of the university.
Shirley was a member of Irving; Holmes County, Ohio; and the Van Zandt County, Texas, genealogical societies.
Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Philo Edward "Eddie."
At this time, the Murphy family would like to extend our appreciation to Shirley's longtime home health care aide, Karen Odell King, to Connie Rainey, to Wilma McDonald, to the Wednesday Morning Cancer Support Group and to our multitude of friends and extended family for their love and support during the past four years.
Survivors: Her husband; three children, daughter, Michelle Murphy Voirin of Hurst, son, Michael Shawn Murphy of Irving and daughter, Meredith "Merry" Murphy Gaskill and her husband, Sam, of Arlington; grandchildren, Christopher and Rebecca Voirin of Hurst and Megan and Kyra Gaskill of Arlington; mother, Edna Wallace of Krum; sister, Beverly Ann Luginbyhl; and several uncles, nieces and nephews.
