Obituary

Paul Richard Sawatzky

October 17, 1951 – March 31, 2025

Paul Richard Sawatzky was born in Altona, Manitoba (Canada) to Jacob and Lena Sawatzky. The eldest of four, he is survived by his siblings Vern (Darlene Hiebert), Louise Kroeker (Randall), and Beverley (Trent Arterberry), as well as eight beloved nieces and nephews.

From a young age, Paul displayed an independent spirit and a keen mechanical aptitude. He pursued a variety of ventures, owning and operating small businesses, farms, and delivery companies before finding his true calling in long-distance trucking. Over the course of his career, he logged more than two million miles on the road, eventually specializing in hauling oversized loads. His trucking routes between Alberta and Texas led him south, where he found home and community in Houston, Tulsa, and Lincoln. Paul became part of a chosen family with Tara Smith-Hayes and embraced his role as “Pop Pop” to Jayden and Jayce Richardson, Dayn Peters, and Kallum Pike. They brought light and purpose to his life, and he, in turn, filled theirs with stories, farm adventures, and a legacy of love.

For the past three and a half years, Paul faced cancer with resilience and determination. Throughout his illness and treatment, he was supported by his dedicated medical team, Tara, Bobby, Libby, Jayden, and Jayce. Thanks to their devoted care, he was able to remain at home in his final months.

Paul will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
