John D. Black, Veteran, Army

John David Black age 77 of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully at 5:28 PM on Saturday, March 15th, 2025 at the home of his daughter and was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was born September 8th, 1947 in Dallas City, IL. The son of Herby B. Black and Edith L Vaughn. He married Ruth R. Schauer of Jamestown, ND in 1970. John joined the
Army in 1966 and served his country until 1970. During his time in the service he was in Germany for 2 years, Vietnam in 1967 and 1968, and finished his service career in Fort Benning, GA.

After the service he went into carpentry for many years until he retired in 2017. He is survived by three daughters: Tina Black of Reynolds, ND, April Black (Jimmy Barnes) of Prairie Grove, AR, and Nicole (Johnathan) Edwards of Fayetteville, AR; one son: William “Brian” (A.J.) Black of Lincoln, AR; nine grandchildren: Alyssa Black (Matthew Ruhl), Shelby Black, Hayden (Elizabeth) Black, Landen Black, Zachary Barnes, Karter Edwards, Kai Edwards, and Nylah Edwards; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his father and mother Herb B. Black and Edith L Vaughn; six brothers: Herby, Charles, Richard, Ronnie, Loren, Gene (step brother); two sisters: Helen Cronin and Barbara Timmerman; One son-in-law, Kenneth Espelund; One Grandson, Jonathan Black.

He will be missed as a member of “The Liars Club” at One Stop Mart in Prairie Grove, AR as well as by his K-9 companion, Bailey.

Per John’s wishes there will only be a private interment held at the Fayetteville National Cemetery in Fayetteville, AR where he will rest in the same columbarium with his wife, Ruth.

Tributes

My condolences goes out to the Black family.John and Ruth were very good friends back in the Eldridge days. Tina and Bryan grew up with my kids those days. John will be with Ruth now watching over their family now. Lots of old memories that will never forget. Prayers and hugs to all. Your dad will be missed along with your mother????????????

I only met him once. His Son Brian is a dear friend of mine and co-worker. He did a great job as a Father in raising Brian. I guess I know him through his Son Brian who I love and appreciate deeply.
