Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Paul Johnson announces his passing. Paul was born in Appleton Minnesota, on July 22, 1942, and moved to the New Orleans area at the age of eight. Throughout the course of his life, Paul was many things -- member of the LSU marching band, veteran of the United States Army, amateur race car driver, motorcycle enthusiast, feature columnist for a sports car magazine, and the greatest father and grandfather his kids could ever wish for.

Paul retired from the automotive industry in 2007, and it was in his post-retirement life that he found his passion as a volunteer at Ozark Literacy Council. Paul was a gifted teacher and mentor who shared his creativity and love of language with his many students. Over the course of ten years, he was a continuous presence, serving as a teacher, tutor, trainer, board member, and was the 2008 Ozark Literacy Council Volunteer of the Year. Paul was also named the 2008 Arkansas Bar Association Tutor of the Year. Paul’s passion and mission were to help adult students from around the world learn more about American culture and our language.

He is survived by his sons, Michael and Whitman, five grandchildren, Blane, Taylor, Brittney, Brooke and Madison, his favorite ex-wife, Pam, and his favorite mother-in-law, Maxine. He is also survived by four brothers, Lee, Hugh, Gus, and Eric. To know Paul was to love him. We already miss him.

Tributes

We were so saddened to hear that Paul had passed away. He was a good neighbor, always had a smile! It made me smile when I would see him leaving for a ride on his motorcycle! Rest in Peace, Paul. Our hearts go out to the family.

I was stunned when Pam told me about PJ. We started out as coworkers, but that quickly evolved into a very close friendship that has lasted for many years. I will miss him tremendously, as will others who had the chance to know him well. Sincere condolences to PJ's family.

Paul was a wonderful man and although we only saw him a few times, I know how very proud he was of you and your family. Your girls had a good man to look up to as a grandfather.
